22 February 2011

First Meeting

8th February 2011

Present: Chich, Ken, John, Mike.

1. We reviewed the proposed aims of the group and agreed they seem about right.

Educate ourselves about the issues.

Encourage sustainability in our churches and communities.

Share experience of good practice and expertise.

Discern and develop the church’s prophetic voice.

The importance of education and disseminating learning (and therefore communication) was discussed.

2. Communication
Ken will contact David Marshall to discuss

a. Diocesan Website : It was noted lots of events happening but within different networks. Therefore not everyone hears about every things. We want to approach the diocese to see if the diocesan website could be used to signpost events more clearly (looking at website – perhaps a blue label “sustainability” on website).

b. Message Calendar for Crux articles. Try to submit something monthly to Crux on a Sustainability issue.

Other ideas:

a. Produce a series of short articles to go directly into parish magazines.

b. Approach Deanery Chapters / Synods to increase information and awareness of the group. We each try our own Deanery? It was noted when speaking to clergy it is helpful to have something to offer them.

c. Need to collect stories from around diocese and beyond on sustainability:
e.g Chorlton’s Big Green Festival, 4C community centre at Christ Church, Ashton-under-Lyne, what else?

3. Education

Broad based education including Science, Theology, Ethics, Liturgical, & Practical matters.

To this aim:

People to report back (200 words) on events and conferences they attend to share learning (distributed by email).

John to report back on Earth Abbey Day in Wythenshawe
Chich to report back on John Ray Institute conference.
A number of us may be going to the Climate of Hope Conference in Leeds on 12th March.

Aim to put on some of our own events in due course.

Approach the diocese to hold a Formation Day on Sustainability.

Next meeting : 17th March, 8pm at Chich’s Rectory

Chich to lead short act of worship/prayer

Ken to lead group through his paper on some biblical resources responding to Climate Change.
